How your age is calculated

The calculator counts completed units only. It first counts the full years since the date of birth, then the full months since the last birthday, and then the days left over. You become one year older on your birthday, not before.

Months have different lengths, so a birth day near the end of a month needs a rule. When the birth day does not exist in a month, such as the 31st in a 30-day month, the last day of that month counts as the monthly anniversary. For the same reason, a person born on February 29 is counted as a year older on February 28 in years that have no February 29.

The totals in months, weeks, and days count from the date of birth up to the chosen date. The calculation uses the dates on your device only, without the time of birth, so it does not show hours or minutes.

Different ways of counting age

In most countries, age is the number of birthdays a person has completed, and that is the method used here. Some traditional systems, including ones used in parts of East Asia, count a newborn as one year old and add a year at the New Year rather than on the birthday. Those systems give a different number and are not covered by this calculator.

Results are for general information. If an age matters for a legal, medical, or official purpose, check the rule used by the organization involved, especially for February 29 birthdays.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my exact age?

Choose your date of birth in the calculator and select the “Calculate age” button. The result shows your age in completed years, months, and days, plus your age in total months, weeks, and days.

How old will I be on a future date?

In the “Age on this date” fields, choose the future date you are interested in, such as a wedding or a graduation day. The result shows the age you will have reached on that day. You can also choose a past date to see how old someone was then.

If I only know the birth year, how old am I?

Subtract the birth year from the current year. If the birthday has not happened yet this year, subtract one more. For example, on March 1, 2026, someone born in July 1990 is 35: 2026 minus 1990 is 36, and the July birthday has not arrived yet. To see the age for every birth year since 1940, use the age chart by birth year.

When does someone born on February 29 get a year older?

In leap years, on February 29. In other years, this calculator counts February 28 as the birthday, so a person born on February 29, 2000 turned 25 on February 28, 2025. Some laws and organizations use March 1 instead.

Why can the result show “1 month and 30 days”?

Because months have different lengths. For someone born on January 31, 2001, the first monthly anniversary was February 28, as February had no 31st. From February 28 to March 30 is 30 more days, so the age on March 30 is 1 month and 30 days.

How many days old am I?

Calculate your age and look at the “In days” line. It counts every day from your date of birth up to the chosen date, including the extra day in each leap year.

Is my date of birth saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The dates you choose are not stored or sent to a server.
