Why there are two possible ages

Age goes up by one on each birthday. If you know only the birth year, you can't tell whether the birthday has already passed this year, so there are two possible ages: one before the birthday and one after it.

Subtracting the birth year from the current year gives the age you reach on your birthday this year. Before that birthday, you are one year younger. On December 31, every birthday of the year has passed, so there is only one possible age.

The calculators use today's date on your device. For an exact age in years, months, and days, use the exact age calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my age from my birth year?

Subtract your birth year from the current year. That is your age if your birthday has already passed this year, including if it is today. If your birthday is still to come, subtract one more. For example, someone born in 1990 is 36 after their birthday in 2026 and 35 before it.

Why does the calculator show two ages?

A birth year alone doesn't show whether the birthday has passed yet. The result gives both ages and the dates that decide which one applies. For someone born in an earlier year, there are usually two possible ages. On December 31, there is only one. Someone born this year, on or before today, is under 1 year old. Someone born this year whose birth date is still to come has not been born yet.

Is the current year minus my birth year my age?

Only after your birthday. For example, 2026 minus 1993 is 33, which is the age someone born in 1993 reaches on their 2026 birthday. Before that birthday, they are 32.

What year was I born if I am 25?

Subtract 25 from the current year if you have already had your birthday this year, or subtract 26 if your birthday is still to come. For example, a 25-year-old in 2026 was born in 2001 if they have had their 2026 birthday, or in 2000 if not.

How old is someone born in the 1990s or 2000s?
